Progression

Asking various villagers about the rune stone

Player
I found a broken runestone.
Tamala
Oh, darling. And here I thought you were being sweet, bringing me a present. But I haven't any use for spent, exploding, runes.
But if you find something more interesting where that came from, do drop by again, hmm?

Player
I found a broken runestone.
Subira
That is... certainly surprising. Let me take a look at it.
Hmm... This rune, it means "explode."
But the Army doesn't issue gear like this. In fact, I think I have seen some of these in the capital museums, which would make your find quite old.
Ah, that must be it! It seems you have found the shell of an Umbraan grenade. It poses no danger now that its magic has been spent, so it is yours to do what you will.
If you wish to know more, perhaps ask someone who experienced the war first hand[sic].

Player
I found a broken runestone.
Zeki
Whatddya think yer doin' bringing that to me, kid? You should know I only make deals for stuff that works!
Maybe you can trick someone who likes old stuff into taking it off your hands. Tell 'em it's a fixer-upper!

Upon asking Ashura about the rune stone

Player
I found a broken rune stone.
Ashura
A rune stone, huh? Mind if I take a look?
... This... I recognize this.
This is the shell of an Umbraan explosive.
As I'm sure you've learned, magic is highly regulated in the Palian Republic. Not so much in Umbraa.
While the Republic Army had strength in numbers, Umbraa is full of caves... which made magical explosives an effective tactic against us.
Thank you for bringing this to me. I don't think the Elderwood ever fully recovered from the War, but cleaning it up is the first step.
If you don't mind, I'll be taking that from you. Don't think it's dangerous anymore, but I have an idea on how we can move forward.

Letter from Ashura

Dear (Player),
Thanks for picking up that old shell in the Elderwood. You know, it just doesn't sit right with me, having these old things lying around now that people are trying to live in peace.

Think I've found a solution for that, though. So stop by whenever you've got the time.

Conclusion

Upon speaking to Ashura

Player
I got your letter about the rune stone.
Ashura
Ah, good to see you're interested in what I've come up with.
You know, it weighs on me a little every day. No matter how deeply buried, we still dig up terrible pieces of the past.
But maybe the solution isn't to bury them deeper.
Instead, what if we changed them? Repurposed them for something good?

Player
That sounds great!
Ashura
I thought so, too. I just needed a bit to think on what I could do with a spent grenade.

Player
Change can be good.
Ashura
I thought so, too. I just needed a bit to think on what I could do with a spent grenade.

Player
But you can't change the past.
Ashura
True, but our actions in the present can change the future.

Player
Ooh, did you make fireworks?
Ashura
Not exactly.

Ashura
It took some doing, but I actually repurposed it into a candle holder. The magic inside should keep the light from going out.
It feels good to transform a thing of violence into a thing of beauty. (Note: dialogue repeats)
