Walkthrough

Part 1: Bird Mask

  • The quest is started by finding a Bird Mask while tilling soil.

Part 2: Lizard Mask

  • After showing the Bird Mask to Jina, you are told to locate another one. A Lizard Mask can be found right behind Sifuu, where she stands early in the morning, southwest of Kilima Village.

Part 3: Insect Mask

  • After you have spoken to Jina about the Lizard Mask, she will ask for yet another one. The Insect Mask can be found where Elouisa stands around Noon at the Ruins north of Fisherman's Lagoon.

Part 4: Kitsuu Mask

  • The fourth mask, Kitsuu Mask, can be found back near Mirror Pond Ruins near the eastern side of the pond, under a tree.

Part 5: Humanoid Mask

  • The final mask can be found back inside the Water Temple at Phoenix Falls. Enter the ruins and keep going straight. Continue past the Phoenix Statue, descend the stairs toward the headless statue (do not cross the water). Turn around and the mask can be found on the right side of the stairs as shown in the image.

Part 6: The Meaning

  • Go to the Ancient Library inside Mirror Pond Ruins. Go straight and take the first right, then another right. When you see the two flight of stairs, turn right and you will see a book on a shelf in front of the stairs. Interact with the book and talk to Jina.

Progression

Asking Jina about the mask

Player
I found this in my garden.
Jina
Oh, it looks like a mask from the Human era. It looks like it's supposed to resemble a bird.
Perhaps the Phoenix?
It must be some sort of religious site.
Perhaps you could look around the valley for more evidence of masks used in human religious ceremonies!

Bring Jina the Lizard Mask Lizard Mask

Player
I found another mask.
Jina
This looks like some type of reptile. Maybe the dragon?
So far, the theory that masks were used in religious ceremonies seems to be holding.

Bring Jina the Insect Mask Insect Mask

Player
Here's another mask.
Jina
An insect...well, I haven't heard of any sort of insect god or other sacred figure.
But who knows what deities existed in the time of the ancient Humans?
Let's keep looking, this could be a big discovery! Bigger than either of us could have imagined!

Bring Jina the Kitsuu Mask Kitsuu Mask

Player
This one looks like a kitsuu.
Jina
Hmm, this is interesting. The Kitsuu were thought to have a sacred relationship with the dragon.
Perhaps the Humans had a similar legend about the Phoenix?

Bring Jina the Humanoid Mask Humanoid Mask

Player
Were fish sacred too?
Jina
No, not that I know of.
Either Humans had gods we don't know about... or perhaps there were some Humans who denied the Phoenix and worshipped animal spirits?
We've got to keep going with our research!

Conclusion

Return to Jina

Player
I've got something to tell you about the masks.
Jina
Oh...so your house must have been built on a theater, not a ritual site!
I guess I got a little carried away subscribing[sic] deep significance to everything I found.
My father always said it can be easy to misinterpret a portrait when you're so close to the canvas you can't to see anything but the brushstrokes.
I guess sometimes a mask is just a mask and not the key to unlocking new understanding about Humanity.

Post-Quest Follow-up

Talk to Jina

Jina
I still feel super silly for getting carried away with those masks.
I mean, why would I just assume they were for some kind of super important religious ritual?

Player
It's an honest mistake.

Player
Honestly? I'm surprised at your emotional response.

Jina
Well, it's a mistake I won't make again. I have to make sure I always keep emotions out of things.
Just because something's exciting, that doesn't mean it's true.
