Dialogue and Mail
Introduction
Speak to Subira at the players house after reaching Romance Level 2
- Subira
- You are here. Wonderful.
- Subira
- I have a, ah- mission. That I was hoping to get your help on.
- Player
- You're acting strangely.
- Subira
- Nonsense. I am just a little out of breath from rushing over...
- The... mission is quite urgent, you see.
- Player
- A "mission", huh?
- Subira
- Yes, a mission. Why are you making that face?
- Player
- Finally, some action!
- Subira
- Yes, you will see plenty of action with me.
- I believe there will be another trade at the Lighthouse soon. It is my intention that we observe it from a safe, hidden spot nearby.
- I must warn you now, stakeouts are rarely as exciting as one might imagine.
- It will be a lot of time sitting quietly together, squinting into the darkness. Then, if we are lucky, it ends with the evidence we need to start making arrests.
- I, ah... usually do these alone. But I thought perhaps this time, you might join me.
- Player
- Wait, so it actually is a mission?
- Subira
- Yes. What did you think it was?
- Player
- An awkward attempt to ask me on a date?
- Subira
- Yes, well. You thought wrong. This is a perfectly official mission.
- Player
- Honestly, no idea. I was just trying to flirt.
- Subira
- I may not be an expert on flirtation, but I do not believe repeating mundane words in a suggestive tone counts.
- Player
- I'd love to help!
- Subira
- Excellent. I knew I could count on you.
- There are some preparations I must make to ensure our security. I would appreciate if you would provide the sustenance for our stakeout.
- Steak dinner? Tomato soup? Stir Fry? Apple pie? I care very little what you bring... as long as it is something you enjoy.
- Well then. I will see you tonight.
- Do not be late.. and make sure you are not followed.
Progression
Speak to Subira at the Abandoned Lighthouse
- Subira
- I look forward to seeing what you will bring.
- Player
- I brought apple pie!
- Subira
- An apple pie? How unconventional! Yet fruit is nutritious after all. I suppose I shall make an effort to remember that you enjoy sweets.
- Player
- I brought stir fry!
- Subira
- Stir fry? A meal after my own heart. I suppose I shall make an efforr to remember that you also enjoy rice.
- Player
- I brought steak dinners!
- Subira
- You must be an impressive hunter to bring a steak dinner. I suppose I shall make an effort to remember that you enjoy hearty foods.
- Player
- I brought tomato soup!
- Subira
- You must be an impressive gardener to grow the ingredients for your own tomato soup. I suppose I shall make an effort to remember that you enjoy soups.
- Before I came to Kilima... I did not realize how colorful the world was. How much variety there was. Smells, sounds, sights.
- Ahem. Of course, I knew these things logically. I observed them during my missions, noted strange things as evidence.
- But I did not... feel them, before Kilima.
- Before I met you.
- Come, sit. The night is young, and we have many hours to go before our target is to arrive.
- Player
- Pretty cozy Stakeout!
- Subira
- Yes. I see no reason to be uncomfortable while we wait. The traps I have set up will announce when our suspects approach.
- Player
- Won't the candlelight attract attention?
- Subira
- I have set up trip wires in the surrounding area. If anyone approaches we will be notified, and have plenty of time to douse the lights.
- I picked up this wine on a suggestion from the Magistrate. Apparently it is made from her nephew Eshelon's vineyard.
- There are other snacks as well in the basket. I... was not sure what else you might like. Hence why I wanted to ensure there was at least something you could eat.
- Were I a better chef, I might have asked you for the recipe to make it myself.
- But you'll simply have to settle for prebought crackers and Daiya farm cheese.
- Player
- Good thing I'm a human trash can!
- Subira
- Yes, I have seen you consume some... questionable things as you run about.
- I do not believe meals keep well stored in one's pack for days. Unless they are Order rations.
- Player
- You didn't have to go to all this trouble...
- Subira
- Food and some candles is very little trouble, (Player).
- ...But I understand your concerns. Allow me to reassure you. I find you worth every trouble, small as it is.
- Player
- I could teach you how to cook!
- Subira
- I... yes. That would be lovely, (Player).
- Player
- So we're drinking on the job, then?
- Subira
- No! I mean... ahem. This is perfectly acceptable protocol. Drinking water from such an old building would be an unsanitary, unnecessary, risk to the mission.
- Come. Let us dig in. You will have to tell me how your day went.
- (Time passes as you and Subira chat. She does not glance away once, attention focused entirely on you the entire time.)
- -and there was pudding splattered all over the floor! Oh, Erwhin- that is, the Grand Luminary- he was furious. I have never seen his face turn so ashen.
- So I said-
- ...
- The traps outside the lighthouse have been triggered.
- That shouldn't be happening.
- Player
- What do you mean? Aren't we on a stakeout?
- Subira
- I-
- No. No, we are not. That was just an excuse to spend some time with you.
- Player
- Called it! This is a DATE!
- Subira
- Was I that obvious? No, it doesn't matter right now.
- There was not supposed to be anyone here. If we're caught-
- (Player). Please, will you go check outside the lighthouse?
- I... will stay here. It is best we are not seen together.
Return to Subira
- Subira
- What did you find?
- Player
- (Show her the clues)
- Subira
- It must be Auni. If he saw us here, and he tells anyone-
- I... I apologize. I need to go, before anyone else comes.
- I will come find you, later. If I can.
Conclusion
Speak to Subira at your plot the next day
- Subira
- (Player). I... hope you are not too disappointed with me.
- Player
- Why would I be? I had fun last night.
- Subira
- You did?
- While that is a... relief to hear, it does not excuse my behavior. I should have been honest from the start about what it was.
- Player
- Just bummed last night ended so early!
- Subira
- I apologize. I did not want things to end so abruptly either.
- Furthermore, you deserved to know the truth from the start about what it was.
- Player
- I'm mostly worried...
- Subira
- I am sorry for giving you anything to worry about. I should have been honest from the start about what last night was.
- Player
- I just want you to be honest. With me, and yourself.
- Subira
- You are entirely correct. I should have told you from the beginning what last night was meant to be.
- I am only grateful that you hold me to a higher standard, (Player). I apologize for not meeting it last night.
- We said that we would remain friends. It was I who drew that line between us... and it was I who crossed it without a care.
- I simply wanted to spend time with you.
- But I am lying to myself if I say the things I feel for you are simply friendly.
- Yet I cannot betray my duty. I have made a promise. To the Order, and to all of Palia.
- Can I truly be so selfish as to turn my back on that? Regardless of how fast you make my heart beat?
- Player
- Then maybe we should stop this here.
- Subira
- That would be for the best.
- And yet the clenching in my chest tells me otherwise.
- Player
- Liking someone isn't selfish!
- Subira
- It would be choosing my own feelings over the safety of the entire nation.
- That is what the Order would claim, at least. Yet I do not believe you would compromise me... or Palia.
- Player
- We haven't been caught yet!
- Subira
- The way you flaunt the rules should have been my first warning sign...
- Yet I feel drawn to you all the same.
- Player
- Are you ending this?
- Subira
- I should.
- And yet the clenching in my chest tells me otherwise.
- For now... I must do some reflection.
- This is not a decision I can make in a single day.
- Until then, we will remain as we are.
- Ah. Before I forget. I have brought you... a gift. To apologize for how things ended last night.
- Ahem. I will see you tomorrow, (Player). I hope.
