Personality

Jel is a quiet, melancholic man with a meticulous approach to his tailoring designs. He takes great pride in both his craft and his physical appearance, often fretting about how others perceive him. Jel is very sensitive and tends to speak softly, with a slightly poetic edge.

However, Jel can also exhibit signs of arrogance, particularly when others are in the realm of tailoring. It is not uncommon for Jel to assume that others are not on his level or wavelength when it comes to crafting attire, nor is it uncommon for him to brush aside comments from well-meaning individuals trying to reassure him when he is feeling low. His best friend, Tish, has suggested that he is normally moody, and he shows signs of being a pessimist on several occasions.

His Starstone, Sapphire Sapphire, represents the Artist, which reflects on his own passion as a tailor. Jel spends the majority of his days and evenings toiling away at his craft.

Jel has suggested that he is a night owl, and that mornings are not his forte. Adding to his quiet demeanor, Jel prefers the calmness of Kilima as opposed to his childhood home in the bustling city of Bahari. Most of his inspiration is taken from nature.

History

Jel was born in the city of Bahari, where he was raised alongside his five sisters. He received his first criticism at the age of five, after his sisters disapproved of a piece he created.

Sometime later, he moved to Kilima Valley, and opened up a tailor shop in the hopes that he could impress his mother and be allowed officially into the House of Omiata line of tailor work.

Upon meeting the Player, Jel was quick to welcome a new face to the town and offer his services to them. After they became friends, Jel requested their assistance after Eshe commissioned him to create a ballgown dress for Kenyatta that was intended for an important event. After helping Jel choose whether to stay true to Kenyatta's vision or Eshe's, he gave the Player the key to his room to reveal the final design. However, things escalated when Kenyatta refused to wear the gown that was ultimately requested by Eshe, prompting the Player to take action and come to an agreement with Kenyatta. Jel, relieved that his reputation was saved, handed the Player the original sketch of Kenyatta's ballgown.

When the Player began getting closer to Jel, the tailor expressed pleasant surprise, having felt the same way since the two first met. It wasn't long before Jel called for his "muse" when his eldest sister, Amara, created trouble for Jel. After the Player reached Jel, he explained how a grand party was to be held in honor of his mother's thirty year anniversary as the head of the family line. But, in an attempt to sabotage him, his sister tasked Jel with cooking the canapes, despite Jel having no cooking experience. Not wishing to admit his shame, he asked the Player to request a batch from Reth. Upon returning with the canapes, Jel was immensely grateful.

However, not long after, he learned that his sister was also aiming to ruin the reputations of the rest of his siblings as well. To add further upset to the tailor, he also discovered that he was originally to play no part at all in the grand party, and that he was ultimately given the role after his youngest sister, Sekai, refused to cook. He asked the Player to request a brooch from Sifuu, so that he could gift it to his sister and have a reason to visit and inform her of the terrible job. When the Player spoke to Sifuu, she warned the Player that giving a brooch was actually a way of confirming romantic interest, something which the Player later related to Jel. He reveals that the brooch was in fact, intended to be a surprise for the Player, and that he forgot to warn Sifuu about spoiling it.

Later, he called the Player back, having settled on a plan to blackmail Amara by threatening to tell their mother about the situation should she not start to take things seriously and make proper arrangements for the grand party. With plans to assign himself the role of furniture decoration, he asked the Player to stop by Tish's store to pick some up. Whilst speaking with Tish, she expressed concerns about how the Player viewed Jel, asking him to create a brooch via Sifuu if they truly did love Jel back. The Player did so, and returned to Jel, where they learned how Jel's interference caused a new problem - Sekai was put in charge, and she had plans to showcase more "controversial" steps that their mother took along the way. With Jel feeling like a failure, the Player handed Jel a brooch, leaving Jel overwhelmed with joy, yet still concerned over how his family felt about his supposed failures.

Relationships

Whilst Jel is well known in Kilima, his best friend is Tish, who shares his passion for the arts in a different format. The two meet every night with their latest designs, and happily provide constructive criticisms. Both Tish and Jel often request items on the other's behalf.

Jel Omiata is from the well-known artisan family Omiata. His known family consists of his mother, Barinka, and his five sisters, Imani, Nia, Fara, Sekai (youngest sister) and Amara (eldest sister). He speaks of them all with high regard, even in instances where others may have been more critical towards them. However, he is not above voicing his concerns to them when pushed in the right direction.

Jel is the only member of his family who has not yet proven himself in his mother's eyes to be a member of the House of Omiata. As a result of this, Jel wishes for nothing more than to be accepted by her and spends much of his time trying desperately to prove himself to his mother, even if this takes his art down a different path - one that he does not necessarily wish to tread down.

Jel also appears to be on good terms with Reth and Zeki.

Although he has worked with Eshe in the past, it is not certain if their relationship is anything further than acquaintances, or if Eshe merely feels obligated to tolerate Jel due to her great respect for his mother, Barinka.
