Functional Furniture

The term Functional Furniture usually refers to a Customization item that, once placed on The Player's Housing Plot, has an interact button available that the Player can activate predominately with the ( on Switch) key.

While most furniture in Palia is purely decorative, a functional piece of furniture has either a specialized utility or can exhibit a unique behavior. The label of the interact button is dependent upon the type of functional behavior that is involved. The interact prompt will only be visible when the Player is close enough to the item, and their viewpoint is in the direction of the functional decor item; Height can play a factor, so adjusting the Player's elevation or proximity in relation to the item may be required if an item is out of reach (i.e. a wall-mounted cabinet placed high on the wall). Even if some types of decor have functionality, not all of the same type may have it available. For example, while chair decor intuitively would be used for sitting, not all chairs have that functionality.

Here are a couple different interact buttons:

For the purpose of this page, the decor interactions described below refer only to those that the Player may encounter while on their Housing Plot.

Open / Close

This functionality feature is typically associated with Storage Decor such as Makeshift Small Cabinet and Sewing Basket, but also Toilet decor. When available, the interact button will toggle the door(s) or lid open or closed, granting access (in most cases) to the empty, customizable, interior of the item.

Exceptions

  • Shipping Bin - The shipping bin is a default, stationary decoration on the housing plot that allows the Player to exchange sellable items for in-game Gold Gold. After using the Open interact button, an interface will pop up to select items to sell.
  • Storage Chests - Not to be confused with Storage Decor, a storage chest is an item with the Storage designation category that allows the player to interact with items in the General Storage of the Housing Plot. Using Open initiates a pop-up interface for the Player to manage items in both their Inventory and General Storage.

Turn On / Turn Off

These functionality options are typically associated with Lights, Sinks, Bathtubs and Fountains.

When available for lights, the interact button will toggle the illumination on or off.

When available for sinks, bathtubs, and fountains, the interact button will toggle running water on or off. Bathtubs with water turned on will fill with hot, steamy water.

In the case of Kenyatta's Record Player, the item will become animated and produce music.

Change Clothes

This functionality feature is exclusive to Wardrobes and allows the Player to change their appearance.

For more information, see Wardrobe.

Sit

This functionality feature is typically associated with Seating such as Bellflower Couch, Homestead Large Bench and Makeshift Armchair. When available, the interact button will allow the Player to sit in the middle of the item's seat. Be aware that if there is an item already on the seat or if the seat is tucked close to or under another item, the Player will still be able to sit, but will appear "clipped" into the furniture that is in the way. To stand back up, the Player simply moves away from the seat with any directional movement key.

Crafters

Bake/Cook/Grill/Mix/Prep

These functionality options are specific to Crafters related to making consumables, such as the Campfire, Mixing Station and Standard Stove. Other interactions while cooking may include Tap to interact (for flipping food, stirring, etc), Add Ingredient (uses left-click mouse, rather than F-key) and Collect (to retrieve completed products).

The appearance and sounds of the items used in this group change, depending on the task at hand, i.e. garlic appears on the Prep Station if the dish requires garlic to be chopped, the Standard Oven will begin to spout smoke when the item inside is ready to collect, etc.

For more information, see Cooking.

Craft +

This functionality feature is specific to Crafters used to process or refine raw materials, and for assembling items at the Worktable. The Craft interact button has several variants: Craft Bars, Craft Glass, Craft Items, Craft Fabric, Craft Planks, and Craft Preserves. When in use, these items have animation and sound effects: hammering sounds when using the Worktable, wood shavings scattering onto the floor around the Heavy Sawmill, etc.

For more information, see Furniture Making.

Make +

This functionality feature is specific to Crafters related to Fishing and Gardening, such as a Seed Collector or Worm Farm. They allow the Player to raise Bait, create Fertilizer, and harvest Seeds. There are three variants: Make Seeds, Make Worms, and Make Glow Worms. When in use, these items become animated and produce sound effects: the lids on the worm farms close, and particles periodically spew out into the collection bags.

For more information, see Crafters, Fishing and Gardening

Weed/Examine/Harvest

These functionality options are specific to Soil, a functional decor related to growing Crops. As the plants in the soil change, so too do the available interactions. They allow the player to maintain a garden while their crops mature by using Weed to remove unwanted wild plants, Examine to monitor the stats of the surrounding crops, and Harvest to take the Fruit, Vegetable, or Crop once it has fully matured.

For more information, see Gardening.

Unique Items

Mailbox

The Mailbox is a default stationary decoration on the housing plot that cannot be moved. It has a unique function called Open Mailbox which opens the in-game mail window.

Modification Bench

This Modification Bench has an exclusive functionality feature called Open Modification Bench.

For more information, see Modification.

Well

The Well does not have an interact button, but instead allows the Player to fill their watering can with water from the well.

Furniture Maker's Drawing Board

The Furniture Maker's Drawing Board has a Turn Page interact button. This allows the Player to change the appearance of the item by "flipping the pages" back and forth.
