Dialogue and Mail

Introduction

Upon speaking to Kenli

Kenli
I just got a letter back from my sister the Duchess. I hate to say it, but (Player)...
The deed was sadly not the victory against my sister we hoped it would be.
It only guarentees [sic] her family's right to live on the land, not to farm on it...
Player
Why don't you just overthrow her?
Kenli
Overthrow my sister...that's a good one!

Player
It wasn't AGAINST her. It was FOR the Daiyas.
Kenli
Well, you know, potatoes, tomatoes. No matter what you call it, it's all the same.
She said the Archduke's seal was too smudged to identify as truly his, so now the contract has been rendered invalid.
We must deliver the new tax amounts in full or the new tenants will be moving in next week!
Player
The Duchess sounds like an awful person.
Kenli
She really is not bad at heart. I'm sure that she has her reasons.
But that is easy for me to say, as her brother.

Player
Is there anything we can do to change her mind?
Kenli
Everything I can think of would offend her and possibly even damage me and Eshe's reputation.
I...don't think what my sister is doing is just. And I need to find a way to stop her. But first, I will need to ask you to buy me some time.
If it's not too much trouble, I was hoping you could help me gather the necessary crops again?

Conclusion

Upon returning to Kenli with the crops

Kenli
Thank you for delivering the harvest.
But I'm afraid it's too late...my sister has the new tenants already set to move in.
Oh heavens! I haven't had the courage to tell the Daiyas yet.
The poor dears are going about their days, having no idea their lives are about to be flipped upside down!
I hate for you to be the bearer of such bad news, but could you talk to Delaila about this for me?
Player
You need to stand up to your sister.
Kenli
You're right. But how? What can I do to make her see the light?
Oh, I know! I'll write her a strongly worded letter! That should do the trick!

Player
I'm not running errands for you anymore!
Kenli
You're right. When I agreed to become mayor of this down, I agreed to perform...certain duties. Not all of them pleasant.

Player
I'm sorry. This is too much pressure...
Kenli
Alright...I'll do it. When I agreed to become mayor of this down [sic], I agreed to perform...certain duties. Not all of them pleasant.
It's unfair of me to pile so much of my responsibilities on you. This is my burden to bear.
Thank you again for all your help, (Player). I'll settle this one way or another!

Player
It'd be better coming from you.
Kenli
...You're right. I am the mayor of Kilima after all, and I swore an oath to serve this village.
That means being the one to share news, both good and bad, to my constituents.
The poor dears are going about their days, having no idea their lives are about to be flipped upside down!
It's unfair of me to pile so much of my responsibilities on you. This is my burden to bear.
Thank you again for all your help, (Player). I'll settle this one way or another!

Post-Quest

Letter from Kenli

Dear (Player),
I wanted to let you know I heard back from my sister and she agreed to let the Daiyas stay under their old tax rate... on the condition that I supplement their taxes with gold, of course. Thank you for helping me through this. I wouldn't have had the courage to do this without you.

PS - Please don't tell Eshe about the gold!

Dear (Player),
So, I tried to gather the courage to tell the Daiyas they needed to leave. But then I discovered that I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Furthermore, I discovered that it wasn’t fear…or at least, it wasn’t JUST fear that was keeping me from going through with my duty. It was guilt.

What my sister was doing was clearly wrong and I had to put a stop to it! I wrote her a strongly worded letter and she agreed to let the Daiyas stay under their old tax rate...on the condition that I supplement their taxes with gold, of course. Thank you for helping me through this. I wouldn’t have had the courage to do this without you.

PS - Please don’t tell Eshe about the gold!
