Gardening
Gardening is a Skill in Palia which allows The Player to grow their own Crops.
The Gardening Guild representative in Kilima Valley is Badruu.
“ | Gardening is all about growing your own crops at your home, which you can then use for home-cooked meals, pickles and jams, or selling directly! Badruu would be happy to provide soil and starter items, and once you’ve gotten comfortable with the basics, you can check out Zeki’s store for even more seeds. | ” |
Introduction

Comments: Missing introduction of Gardening to the Player.
During the quest Gardening 101, players receieve two Soil, a Makeshift Hoe and a Makeshift Watering Can.
Mechanics
Gardening is a skill all about growing and harvesting crops to sell, cook with, gift, or even make more crops! Growing crops is a multi stage process.
Multiplayer
Players can water crops in other Housing Plots, but they cannot harvest them.
Soil
Before the Player can create a garden, they must first have Soil. Soil can be purchased from Badruu's stand. A maximum of 9 soil can be purchased and placed per Player.
Soil is placed on the Player's home plot, and soil tiles snap together to easily form a larger block of farmland. A Hoe is then used to till the ground by holding left click ( on Switch) and dragging the hoe across the soil. Doing this will begin uncovering the squares used for planting crops in, once a tile has been sufficiently revealed, it will become an interactable tile that can hold one crop. There is a chance while tilling soil to uncover buried objects.
Soil will revert to its untilled state after 48h; If a crop is growing on this tile, it will revert at the time of harvest.
Seeds
The Player must use a seed from the action bar in order to plant it in soil. When interacting a seed with the soil, there will be a preview of where the plant will grow, this is important when planting any crops which take up more than one square to grow (i.e. 2x2 or 3x3).
Seeds can be acquired by:
- Purchasing them from Zeki's General Store
- Converting harvested crops into seeds using the Seed Collector
- A small chance to get them from harvesting mature crops
- Receiving them as quest rewards
- Having an item request fulfilled
- Receiving them from Zeki's Wondrous Machine
Seeds have buffs that affect nearby crops of other types; use these buffs to make the gardening process easier and produce more profitable harvests.
- Affected crops are only the ones directly connected to buffing crop - crops on the diagonal are not affected.
- Crops only affect other types, meaning that tomatoes' Water Retain does not affect itself nor other nearby tomatoes.
- Benefits do not stack with Fertilizer.
- Blueberries and Apples require multiple adjacent crops of the same benefit type to gain the benefits of those crops, but they do not need to all be on the same side.

2-day progress for bonus growth day is not saved, relogging or switching maps will reset it to 0. When bonus growth triggers, other bonuses are not applied for the second time. E.g. potato with harvest boost from adjacent crop or fertilizer will end with 4 day grow time (down from 5 with one bonus day) and 4/5 chance to get harvest boost.
Watering & Weeding
Once a crop is placed into a farming space, it must be watered in order to advance one stage. Crops not watered do not wither, but will remain at their current growth stage until watered. Crops must be watered before 6:00 AM, which is the time that crops advance a growth stage. The Tomato, Potato, and Napa Cabbage help adjacent plants retain water.
Knapweed has a chance to grow on any tile with a growing crop. Weeds must be removed for the plant to continue growing. Knapweeds can be sold for a small sum of gold, or kept for future purposes. The Carrot, Onion, and Bok Choy help prevent weeds from growing on adjacent plants.
Harvesting
Once crops have advanced through sufficient days of growth (listed on their respective seed packets) they become ready to harvest. They can be left ready to harvest until a time deemed appropriate by the Player, they will not wilt. Crops have a chance to give seeds along with their produce, and produce has a chance to be Quality, increasing their value.
Going to Market
Selling the crops directly after a harvest will produce less profit than processing them in some manner.
Below is a table on how much different products sell for; it takes into consideration that some products (seeds) have varying amounts of inputs and outputs. This assessment does not take into consideration the amount of time that it takes to process these items.

- * Value is the best sell option. Example: 10 Star Quality Apples would be better turned into Jam, than turning into 1 Star Quality Apple Seed.
- Note: This table does not include harvesting quantities. Amount varies by plant and by growth treatment.
Tips and Tricks
Using different combinations of seed properties, fertilizer, and star quality seeds will modify the results of your harvest.
Garden Planning
Gardening can be a good source of income! To maximize that income it can be beneficial to plan out your garden, making sure your crops benefit from the different bonusses each crop gives to the surrounding crops. .Aisen created a very useful tool to plan out your garden: Palia Garden Planner. Here you can select the size of your garden, types of crops, and different types of fertilizer in order to find the perfect strategy for you.
Here is an example for a 3x3 garden, utilizing level 10 crops, but there are many others to be discovered, or you can plan your own. The tool leans heavily on theory crafting done by Arenvanya, who has written a very solid guide on the topic.
Weekly Challenges
Weekly Challenges are skill-related Accomplishments that a player can complete once weekly upon reaching Gardening Level 10. A player can complete up to 3 Weekly Challenges for Gardening each week, awarding a total of 100 Gardening Medals.
Weekly Challenges are currently the same every week, and reset every Monday at 4:00 AM UTC. Progress from uncompleted Challenges will carry over and count towards the following week.
