Dialogue and Mail
Introduction
Upon speaking to Zeki on your plot.
- Zeki
- Uh, hey.
- So, this is kinda awkward. You know how I've been helping Najuma with her inventions?
- Well, I asked her the other day why she's so set on this mines thing. She's got a bring future ahead of her with her inventions, after all.
- No reason to be wandering around in the dark. S'a waste of her talents.
- She wouldn't give me a straight answer. But that's when I remembered where I've seen her design before.
- It's one of her mom's prototypes.
- It was years ago, so I didn't realize at first. But that's definitely a Leta original.
- You get what I'm sayin', right? Kid loses her mom and becomes weirdly obsessed with going into the mines?
- The mines where she lost said mom?
- Something tells me those two things aren't a coincidence.
- Player
- Maybe she just thinks mines are cool.
- Zeki
- Heh... wait. You're serious?
- Oh, that's good. You should be a comedian, pal. Man, I needed that.
- I think you'd better go talk to her. This is way outta my paygrade, and I don't think shes' talking much to her dad either.
Progression
Upon speaking to Najuma while she's in her room.
- Player
- I wanted to talk to you about the mines.
- Najuma
- Yeah? I’m super close to finishing the design, and then dad will have to let me in.
- Player
- Why are you so obsessed with them?
- Najuma
- I’m not obsessed. This is my Path, you know. I’ll be going into them sooner or later!
- Player
- You're definitely obsessed.
- Najuma
- ...Fine, so maybe I am a little bit!
- It's my fault dad's struggling so much. Why can't I try and help him out?
- Player
- You're still a kid.
- Najuma
- I don't have time to be a kid! It's my fault dad's struggling so much.
- Player
- I’m just worried about you...
- Najuma
- There’s nothing to worry about, I’m not a little kid!
- Besides, who else is going to help my dad? It’s my fault he’s struggling so much!
- Why can't I try and help him out?
- Player
- What do you mean, your fault?
- Najuma
- ...
- If it weren’t for me, mom would still be here. Dad wouldn’t have to do everything on his own.
- Player
- There's no way that's your fault.
- Najuma
- It is. Trust me.
- Player
- Why would you say that?
- Najuma
- Because it's true!
- When I was like five, I ran away in the middle of the night. I don’t remember why... some dumb fight with my mom.
- I decided I’d go and live in the mines. But I got lost in the dark. My mom found me a few hours later.
- That’s when the accident happened. The supports started crumbling, walls caving in...
- Mom grabbed me and threw me to safety. A boulder still caught me by my leg, but mom...
- She was trapped behind the rubble.
- When dad found us, he freed me first. Then he spent all night with people from Kilima trying to clear the cave-in.
- By the time they got through...
- Well. Sometimes gas builds up in the mines. Especially if there’s bad ventilation. Or a cave-in.
- If she hadn’t followed me... if I hadn’t run away...
- Player
- I'm so sorry.
- Najuma
- It's okay.
- Well, it's not. But it's been a long time since the accident
- But that’s why I have to do this. With my suit, I’ll be safe. I can go deeper into the mines, and maybe find some new veins.
- Player
- That definitely wasn't your fault.
- Najuma
- You don’t have to lie to me, (Player). I’m old enough to handle the truth.
- That’s why I have to do this. With my suit, I’ll be safe. I can go deeper into the mines, and maybe find some new veins.
- Player
- You were just a kid!
- Najuma
- So? It doesn't matter how old I was. I ran away, and she paid the price.
- That's why I have to do this. With my suit, I'll be safe. I can go deeper into the mines, and maybe find some new veins.
- Player
- It sounds like it was an accident.
- Najuma
- An accident I caused. If I hadn't ran in there...
- That’s why I have to do this. With my suit, I’ll be safe. I can go deeper into the mines, and maybe find some new veins.
- It’s too dangerous for Dad to go, so I will.
- ...Thank you for coming to talk to me. It means a lot, really. But I’d better get back to work.
Upon speaking to Hodari at your plot
- Hodari
- I need your help.
- Heard you’ve been talking to Najuma. Which is good, because she sure ain’t talkin’ to me.
- Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t mad. In fact, m’glad someone’s looking out for her.
- But that someone should be me. I just...
- Every time I try to talk to her, somethin’ goes wrong. I say th’wrong thing, she gets mad, and we both just leave upset.
- Player
- Have you tried NOT doing that?
- Hodari
- Now why didn't I think'a that?
- Player
- I'm not sure how I can help...
- Hodari
- Ain't your job to fix things... but I have an idea.
- Player
- She doesn't listen to me, either.
- Hodari
- I ain't asking you to talk to her. This one's on me.
- Player
- I guess I could try again.
- Hodari
- I ain’t asking you to talk to her. This one’s on me.
- I want to help her. With her suit.
- Player
- Say what now?
- Hodari
- Y’heard me. I tried playin’ the stern father, and it got me nowhere.
- It’s time I met her on her level instead.
- Player
- What about the mines?
- Hodari
- Oh, I have no plans on lettin' her into those mines... but the suit's harmless.
- It's time I met her on her terms, not mine.
- Th’problem is… I ain’t exactly good at all this mechanical... stuff.
- That was Leta and Najuma’s thing.
- So maybe what she needs right now is a little bit of her mom.
- I’ve got Leta’s old notebook. It’s full of her blueprints, but some of the pages are ripped out.
- If you can help me find the missing ones.. well. I know it would mean a lot to Najuma, if we could give her the full set.
- Player
- Any idea where to start?
- Hodari
- There’s a couple spots I knew she used to go and sketch at.
- Can ask Zeki, too, if he knows where any of them might be.
- An’ you might want to check with the chapaas. Once or twice I remember her complaining about them stealing her notebook.
- I’d better get going. If you find those blueprints, let me know, alright? Be nice, to see Najuma smile again.
Optional: speak to Hodari without all five blueprints.
- Player
- Any ideas on the blueprints?
- Hodari
- Try huntin’ down some chapaas. Those critters steal all sorts of things.
Upon speaking to Zeki
- Player
- Do you have any of Leta’s old designs?
- Zeki
- Hmmm... think I got something lyin’ around here...
- Got it! We were workin’ on these short-range communicators together. Still have the old blueprints.
- What do ya want with ‘em?
- Player
- They're for Najuma.
- Zeki
- Ahh, I see what you’re doin’ here! Smart, very smart.
- Here, take ‘em. I’m not gonna keep a girl from her birthright, after all.
Conclusion
Upon returning to Hodari
- Player
- I found the blueprints!
- Hodari
- Thanks. S’time I got somethin’ right.
- Just… hope it ain’t too late.
Post-Quest
Letter from Najuma
Dear (Player),
My dad told me you helped him find all my mom’s old blueprints. I don’t know if I really deserve them… but I’ll treasure them anyways.
I wanted to thank you, so I put one of her designs together, and included a copy of the blueprint in case you want to make more. I call this one “Chapaabot”, but I hope you can call him a friend. Especially since you’ve been such a good one to me!
Najuma
Notes
- Najuma can be spoken to in her room at any time to continue this quest.
