Dialogue and Mail
Introduction
Upon speaking to Reth at your plot
- Reth
- Hey, not to just make myself at home, but uh, I got something I need to run by you real quick.
- You didn't happen to, uh... pay off my standing cartel debt, did you?
- Player
- No.
- Reth
- If it wasn't you, then who?
- Player
- Maybe I did it in my sleep?
- Reth
- If it wasn't you, then who?
- Player
- Someone paid off your debt? Great...
- Reth
- No, not great. Really scary actually!
- Zeki's boss, One Eyed-Zed, got an anonymous envelope of cash saying it was for me.
- Zed actually showed up at the inn asking who sent this to him, and questioned me about who I've been telling about my deal.
- I told him I hadn't told anyone, but I did tell you.
- And now...I'm worried you might be in danger.
- Player
- I can take Zed!
- Reth
- I wouldn't take this lightly, (Player). That guy has Palium-reinforced claws. And he uses them!
- Player
- What else is new?
- Reth
- I wouldn't take this lightly, (Player). That guy has Palium-reinforced claws. And he uses them!
- Player
- That's worrying...
- Reth
- You've got that right. I could never forgive myself if something happened to you because of my stupid stupidness.
- Player
- We have to get to the bottom of this.
- Reth
- You've got that right. I could never forgive myself if something happened to you because of my stupid stupidness.
- I hate to keep asking you for stuff, but do you think you could maybe try to do some snooping around and figure out what happened?
- I'm afraid if I look around it will seem suspicious. I'm sure Zed's got tails and whiskers everywhere.
Progression
Upon speaking to Tish
- Player
- You didn't happen to...uh...pay off Reth's debts?
- Tish
- The furniture store's doing well, but it's not doing that well.
- Besides, I would let you know if I was going to do something that big.
Upon speaking to Zeki
- Player
- You don't happen to know about Reth's debt being paid?
- Zeki
- Me? Debt? What's debt? Never heard of it!
- Player
- Reth is in trouble...
- Zeki
- Trouble. How?
- Player
- Ok, I'll let Zed know.
- Zeki
- Zed? What does he have to do with this?
- Oh no, the cartel must have assumed Reth blabbed about his deal...
- Player
- What are you going to do?
- Zeki
- Well, since I don't have anything to do with it, I don't know what I can do.
- Player
- So you paid Reth's debt?
- Zeki
- I didn't say nothin' of the sort. You keep your mouth shut.
- Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go write an unrelated letter to Zed.
Upon returning to Reth
- Reth
- So you...uh...find anything more out about the "ebtday ituationsay."
- Player
- What?
- Player
- Speak common.
- Reth
- Ah!!!! So much for being discrete [sic].
- Did you find out more about the debt situation?
- Player
- Zeki was acting a bit suss...
- Reth
- Player
- It was Zeki. It was definitely Zeki.
- Zeki! That's a good one. There's no way he'd waste his coin on me.
- He's way too worried about his own fiscal freedom to spend money on anyone else's.
- Player
- I think you should talk to Zeki.
- Reth
- Maybe instead of just asking around you could look for some evidence? There has to be a paper trail somewhere.
- Player
- I guess it was the Flothman...
- Reth
- Maybe instead of just asking around you could look for some evidence? There has to be a paper trail somewhere.
- Hm, now where would the cartel hide secret documents?
Zed,
I know there was a misunderstandin' about the money I left you for the Majiri kid. I lost a bet with him and owed him his debt in return. Sorry I forgot to put my pawprint on the envelope. I guess I'm gettin' sloppy these days.
Your ole pal,
Zeki
PS - If you're down for a game of cards next week, I'll be in the city.
Upon returning to Reth
- Player
- (Show Reth Letter)
- Reth
- Pfft! You think THIS counts as proof.
- Player
- Um...yes.
- Player
- No, I just thought it was nice reading material.
- Reth
- Come on, this could have easily been forged.
- Player
- You're kidding yourself.
- Player
- Why would he do that?
- Reth
- Zeki must have heard about this whole thing and just wanted to take credit for it.
- That's just the kind of thing he would do.
- Player
- It's really not.
- Reth
- Maybe not, but there's gotta be some angle. I'm just not convinced he would spend all that money out of the kindness of his heart.
- Player
- If he wanted to take credit, why would he hide it?
- Reth
- I -- I -- uh, I don't know, okay? But there's gotta be something in it for him.
- Player
- I'm not helping if you don't listen.
- Reth
- I know it seems like I'm just being stubborn, but I'm stubborn for a reason. Zeki doesn't do things just to be a nice guy.
- Player
- I actually think the Flothman framed him.
- Reth
- I know it seems like I'm just being stubborn, but I'm stubborn for a reason. Zeki doesn't do things just to be a nice guy.
- It's sweet that you're so trusting, (Player), but I don't have that luxury.
- That Zed guy could hurt me...or Tish. If you won't help me get to the bottom of this, then I'll do it myself.
Letter from Reth
Hey (Player),
I know I seem like I'm being irrational about the whole Zeki thing. It's just...after everything I've been through, it's really hard for me to believe someone would stick their neck out for me. Especially someone with so much to lose. Regardless of what happened, I shouldn't have taken my feelings out on you.
Here, I baked you this to say, "I'm sorry." Food apologies are sort of my jam. And, hey, this one contains actual jam.
Reth
Optional: Upon speaking to Zeki
- Player
- Why did you pay off Reth's debt?
- Zeki
- Well, the Underground has been doing boomin' business since the humans arrived...
- And I figured I got the kid into the situation. I might as well help him out.
- Player
- Seems reasonable.
- Zeki
- Well, you know me, kid. Reasonable to a fault. In the history books, they'll call me, "Zeki the Reasonable."
- Player
- That's nice of you!
- Zeki
- Not really. I mean. Is it nice for a guy to pay your healer bills if he's the one who pushed you down the stairs?
- Now if only what I paid off would actually get him outta this mess. He's gotta keep buyin' the shipments for his sister, which means more debt.
- Player
- We have to do something.
- Zeki
- I don't know what there is to be done. Not unless we can find another way to cure his sister...!
- Player
- Actually, that might not be necessary...
- Zeki
- She found another cure? Seriously? You gotta tell Reth, kid. Before he orders more and gets himself back in the hole!
- Player
- I promised I wouldn't tell...
- Zeki
- What's more important, keepin' a promise or savin' your friend?
- I'm not tellin' ya what to do, but I know what I'd do.
- Player
- What if he's grown to like the hole?
- Zeki
- TBA
- Player
- Why did you keep what you did a secret?
- Zeki
- Come on, you know why. I got a reputation to uphold. I don't want people thinking I'm the mushy type.
- Besides, who's gonna believe me anyway? I'm a cat from the Underground. Ain't nobody gonna trust me.
Conclusion
Letter from Zeki
Yo Kid,
Tish is coming to confront me about that whole situation with her brother. I may have reversed the little singin' stone trick she played on me and used it ta find out she discovered a cure. And then I may have told Reth, just so he wouldn't get himself into any more trouble. I thought while she was here, it might be the prime opportunity to talk to her about the whole fallin' star situation. Come by the Underground later and help me make her see reason.
Yours truly,
Zeki
Zeki
Upon speaking to Reth, Tish and Zeki
- Zeki
- Finally, the voice of reason arrives.
- I don't know how these two had a single conversation with each other before they met the likes of rational folks like us.
- Seriously, I don't know how they've lived their entire lives like this!
- All I want is one teensy tiny fallin' star to fix my machine, but they can't get over their squabble about how she didn't tell him that she found a cure, and he didn't tell her that he sold his freedom and his potential livelihood to save her life.
- I mean, jeez, get over it already. These things happen!
- Tish
- These things happen? Are you kidding me? He was hiding the truth from me for three years!
- Reth
- But that's only because I didn't want to burden you with the responsibility. I'm supposed to be the big brother. Mom and dad would have expected me to take care of you, not the other way around.
- Player
- Reth was trying to save your life, Tish!
- Tish
- That's the problem. I'm not a damsel. I don't need saving!
- This isn't about your heart being in the right place, Reth. I know you were trying to help me, and I also know what you risked to do that.
- But, I don't just want love, I want respect. That means involving me in decisions about my own life.
- Player
- Reth, you should have involved Tish. It's her life.
- Reth
- You're right. I should have. It's clear she would have found a better solution. She always does! Because she's good at everything! And I'm good at nothing. Not even being good.
- Tish
- This isn't about your heart being in the right place, Reth. I know you were trying to help me, and I also know what you risked to do that.
- But, I don't just want love, I want respect. That means involving me in decisions about my own life.
- Player
- The whole thing's solved now, who cares?
- Zeki
- That's what I'm trying to say. Let's move on and let bygones be bygones.
- Player
- (Silently grab popcorn)
- Tish
- This isn't about your heart being in the right place, Reth. I know you were trying to help me, and I also know what you risked to do that.
- But, I don't just want love, I want respect. That means involving me in decisions about my own life.
- Reth
- I kept telling myself that I kept the truth from you for you, but I think I really did it for me. I guess part of me didn't want to tell you because I wanted to be a hero. You know?
- Tish
- You're already a hero. I've always looked up to you. Some of my best memories are just laughing with you, mom, and dad while we ate a meal you cooked. (Player) and I are lucky to have you as part of our lives.
- Player
- Speak for yourself, Tish.
- Reth
- You're right, (Player). I really screwed up, but hopefully I can show how sorry I am by doing better in the future.
- Player
- You're lucky she's taking it this well.
- Reth
- You're right, (Player). I really screwed up, but hopefully I can show how sorry I am by doing better in the future.
- Player
- I love you just the way you are.
- Reth
- (TBA)
- Player
- It's the everyday things that count.
- Reth
- Oh, guys...all this positive affirmation is turning me magenta.
- Player
- I don't know what I'd do without you.
- Reth
- Oh, guys...all this positive affirmation is turning me magenta.
- Player
- Yeah! You're a hero no matter what!
- Reth
- (TBA)
- Zeki
- So...now that we've got that out of the way, and we're all friends. What about that fallin' star, eh?
- Tish
- Not so fast. I forgave Reth for keeping his cartel activities from me. I didn't forgive you for roping him in.
- Zeki
- I didn't rope him in. He SIGNED UP. And unlike me, he was a grown man when he made that choice -- unlike most Grimalkins.
- The only "choice" we get after we're kicked out of the house as kittens is sign up or starve on the street. I'm the one trying to change all that.
- Come on, kid. Back me up here.
- Player
- Zeki needs the star to take down the cartel.
- Tish
- So he says, but how do I know that's true?
- Player
- Zeki did pay off Reth's debt.
- Tish
- True, and I usually do like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but how do I know that's not part of some elaborate scheme?!
- Zeki
- I'm not askin' you to take this on faith. I know you wasn't born yesterday. No offense, (Player). I got proof of how the douplifier works.
- Reth
- So what? Even if your machine really doubles things, how's that gonna take down the cartel?
- Zeki
- Think about it, Reth. Use that tiny little brain of yours. The cartel don't make most of its money offa magic. It makes it offa exclusive goods. Scarcity.
- What happens if everybody can take a one of a kind masterpiece and turn it inta two like it ain't nothin'?
- Reth
- ...the scarcity goes away.
- Zeki
- And the price of exclusive stuffs goes down.
- Tish
- If the cartel loses money, it means they lose power.....
- Zeki
- Now, you're pickin' up what I'm puttin' down, sister!
- Tish
- Okay, I'm in. I'll help you.
- Reth
- Me too.
- Zeki
- Whoah! Whoah! I get how sis is gonna help. She's got the star. But what are you gonna do, pretty boy, throw soup at Zed?
- Reth
- What I do best...distribution. Think about it. I know every secret drop spot from here to the Umbraan mountains. You're gonna need that kind of knowledge if you want to keep your actions from the Underground.
- Tish
- And your business is gonna need a legitimate face if you want to sell to the Majiri.
- Zeki
- And I suppose it don't hurt if that face is pretty.
- Reth
- Whoo hoo! Finally, my striking good looks give me an advantage.
- Zeki
- Now all you gotta do is get a hair cut.
- Reth
- Never.
- Tish
- Or maybe Jel could give you a makeover!
- Reth
- ...I'll think about the haircut.
- Player
- So you're all working together now?
- Zeki
- Looks that way, kid.
- Player
- So are you guys, like, good?
- Zeki
- Looks that way, kid.
- Reth
- And we have you to thank for it, (Player).
- Tish
- Yeah, thanks for helping us get out of our own heads and finally talk to each other. Who knows? You might have just changed the future of Palia.
- Reth
- And if not, you at least changed our future.
