Only objects that glow with magenta are of Flow. Objects that glow of other colors are merely bioluminescent.

Flow is an energy source in Palia.

Description

Flow is an energy source present throughout the world of Palia, although it can be concentrated in certain parts of nature or in living beings and sensed by those attuned to it. There are different types of Flow: Hydroflow, PyroFlow, AeroFlow, and TerraFlow, which in concentrated forms have different properties. Flow has many uses, including spellcasting and magic devices. Ancient Humans once used flow to build their civilization. However, since their disappearance, many wars have been fought over Flow. Majiri are outlawed from using it due to its potential for great harm. Despite its lengthy history, there is still much to learn about Flow.

History

Thousands of years ago, Humans in Palia harvested and experimented with Flow to advance their civilization, creating Flow generators, Galdur, and other inventions. However, their society mysteriously collapsed, leaving Flow to the remaining residents of the region, the Grimalkin, Galdur, and Majiri.

After centuries of war involving Flow, Palia's feudal monarchies united to form the Palian Republic and the First Council, which through the Palian Unification Treaty, outlawed all Flow use outside The Order and the independent kingdom of Umbraa. However, the Grimalkin cartels were not happy with this and retaliated. This led to the Cartel Trade Wars, a series of court battles, assassinations, and smear campaigns. Finally, the Palian Unification Treaty was appended to outlaw Flow use for Majiri only. Galdur were allowed to remain in touch with their culture and Grimalkin cartels were allowed to operate and practice non-violent forms of magic, such as teleportation and illusion spells, but were banned from trafficking Flow to Majiri.

Because Humans were not written into these laws, Humans are allowed to use Flow, as long as they do not trigger the "Mass Destruction" clause worked into the Treaty.

Uses

Flow has many uses, many of them magical. There are many Flow-infused inventions, such as teleportation gates, security cameras, duplicators, or even weapons. Grimalkin often use Flow to cast illusions, such as creating fake doors or walls or disguising weapons and security equipment as household items. Stones infused with Flow can be inscribed with runes to cast specific spells. Galdurs run on Flow-powered runeworking and use Flow networks to communicate long distances and share data. Flow was the primary power source to run Human generators, although it is unclear what they were used for. Flow-infused items can also be used as a treatment for bodily ailments in the form of wearable medical devices or youth potions.

It seems Humans were studying the different types of Flow to determine what kind of properties they have. For example, Aeroflow was theorized to have anti-gravitational powers. Hydroflow, PyroFlow, AeroFlow, and TerraFlow likely had different applications, since Human facilities often relied on exchanging their different supplies of Flow with each other.

Sources

Flow can be found in many places in nature, even in living beings. Humans, Majiri, and Grimalkin all have different Flow signatures. Some creatures, such as Glow Worms, Silverwings or Enchanted Pupfish have traces of Flow in them. Flow is also present in certain waters, Flow Trees, and Flowstones. The amount of Flow in a location varies from region to region. Kilima Valley has traces of ambient flow, which may explain why Ancient Humans settled there. The Elderwoods has the strongest levels of Flow, so many creatures of Flow live there.
