Introduction
Greetings, (Player)!
As mayor of Kilima Village, it is my great honor to invite you to our second-ever Maji Market!
Due to everyone's warm reception of the first Maji Market, we were able to bring the event back to celebrate a very special occasion... the Dragon moon calendar's very own Luna new year!
Let us join together for many evenings of festivities under the shimmering Luna moon as we welcome good fortune to our doorsteps!
- Location: Kilima Fairgrounds (Southeast of Kilima Village)
- Time: 6pm-3am nightly, until the end of the festivities!
I hope to see you there!
P.S. Please, please, PLEASE attend if you can. If the market doesn't do well, Eshe's going to take over all of the planning. I won't have any say in it anymore!
Kenli
Speak to Kenli
- Kenli
- Happy Luna New Year, (Player), and welcome to the Maji Market!
- Would you like me to tell you what this momentous occasion is all about?
- Player
- I'll pass.
- Kenli
- O-Oh, I see...
- Well, no matter! As long as you are here, you will learn on your own what it is we're celebrating.
- ...Oh! How rude of me. This is for you!
- Player
- An envelope?
- Kenli
- Not just any ordinary envelope. It is known by many names, but it is most commonly referred to as a lucky envelope.
- Look inside, you will understand why it is called that.
- Oh, I know! Why don't you ask Chayne all about lucky envelopes? I'm sure he will have valuable insight to share with you.
- Now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to go for another round of hotpot, this time with a spicy soup base. Hopefully my tongue can handle it!
Progression
Speak to Chayne
- Chayne
- Ah, Phoenix's child. Happy Luna New Year!
- Player
- Happy Luna New Year, Chayne!
- Player
- Right back at you.
- Chayne
- Thank you. Please, take this lucky envelope. I was saving it just for you.
- Player
- (Accept the lucky envelope)
- Chayne
- Has anybody explained what lucky envelopes are to you yet? If you have a minute, I would like to do the honors.
- Player
- Well, don't let me stop you!
- Player
- I was hoping you would.
- Player
- Story time!
- Player
- I guess I can spare a minute...
- Chayne
- The origin of lucky envelopes can be traced well over a milennia into the past.
- Our ancestors gazed upon the heavens and witnessed the Dragon moon, Luna, shimmering brightly like it never had before. Many interpreted that to be a sign of new beginnings.
- The annual spectacle soon became a celebration for people from all walks of life, Majiri and not. Communities gathered together to enjoy many evenings of joy and festivities under Luna's brilliant shimmer.
- These celebrations became what is now known as the Maji Market.
- As the end of the first Maji Market approached, its guests returned home with full bellies and warm hearts. They dreamt deeply that night, vividly reliving the moonlit festivities...
- When they awoke from their slumber, they found coins under their pillows, each that shimmered just as brightly as Luna.
- Player
- Were they gifts from the Dragon?
- Chayne
- One can certainly interpret the events that way, though there are many alternate explanations as well.
- Player
- Their dreams predicted the future!
- Chayne
- One can certainly interpret the events that way, though there are many alternate explanations as well.
- Player
- That sounds too good to be true.
- Chayne
- At the end of the day, you are the sole judge of what you see as the truth.
- Player
- If you think about it, coins look like little moons.
- Chayne
- A keen observation, Phoenix's child. Coins certainly do bear some resemblance to moons.
- Rather than keep all of the coins to themselves, many decided to gift them to others in packets, often ones with intricate designs and colors on them.
- This birthed the tradition of exchanging lucky envelopes.
- The contents and meaning of the envelope differs based on what the occasion is, but at its essence the act means you wish someone well.
- Player
- I hope lots of people wish me well, then!
- Player
- What a thoughtful tradition.
- Chayne
- I can imagine you will receive many lucky envelopes throughout the Luna new year celebration.
- Speaking of wishes, how could I forget to mention our lovely wish tree? I'm sure it was one of the first spectacles you observed upon entering the market.
- As the village sage, it is my honor and duty to serve as the tree's caretaker, as well as the overseer or the rituals surrounding it.
- Player
- Rituals?
- Chayne
- See those colorful papers hanging from the tree? Those are called wish ribbons. Inscribed on them are the wishes of your fellow villagers.
- It is my duty to ensure the process of wish making goes smoothly, along with enlightening curious minds about the history surrounding the tradition.
- All of your fellow villagers have already made their wishes... Erm, all but one.
- Player
- It's you, isn't it?
- Chayne
- In accordance with tradition, the caretaker of the wish tree is the first to make a wish. Mine was up there before any other.
- Player
- Who would that be?
- Chayne
- I had a feeling you were going to be curious.
- Player
- The goodest boy, Tau?
- Chayne
- After me, Tau was the first to make a wish. He was very enthusiastic about it, too.
- Player
- It's definitely Eshe.
- Chayne
- As one of the hosts of the Maji Market, Eshe was among the first to make a wish.
- ...It's Zeki. He has participated in all of the activities except for the wish tree.
- I have seen him glancing over at it from time to time, but he has yet to take part in it... Perhaps because he has been so busy managing his own booth.
- Could you do me a favor and invite him to participate? Thank you.
Speak to Zeki
- Player
- I heard you haven't made a wish yet.
- Zeki
- On what, the candles on my birthday fish? It ain't even my birthday yet, pal. Check back in a couple o' sun cycles.
- Player
- I was talking about the wish tree...
- Zeki
- You're like, the hundredth Human to poke me about it today. You guys must be in cahoots or somethin'. Is it Let's All Bug Zeki Day or what?
- Player
- Actually, it's National Hairball Awareness Day.
- Zeki
- And I wasn't informed?! I'm the primary producer of hairballs here in Kilima Valley, for Dunya's sake! I'm filing a complaint with City Hall right now!
- ...On second thought, it ain't worth all that hassle. All of those papers end up being coasters for the magistrate's tea mugs, anyway.
- Player
- Can you be serious for ONE second?
- Zeki
- What do you mean? I'm as serious as can be! Look at this face! Stonier than Hodari's ain't it?
- ...Oh, I'm just messin' with ya, pal. No need to give me the stank eye!
- Player
- Chayne sent me.
- Zeki
- Did he now? Is this about the other night at the Inn?
- We both got to the entrance at the same time, and had a "you first" battle. He lost and had to walk in before me.
- Player
- When isn't it Let's All Bug Zeki Day?
- Zeki
- Right, right. It's a holiday that never ends. Just like pay day!
- ...Alright. Fine, ya caught me. I didn't hang a colorful wish paper on the tree like everybody else did.
- I'll tell ya why, but ya gotta do somethin' for me first, like make my booth look more enticing so more people give me their money.
- Why don'tcha spin my prize wheel? Give it a whirl and see how lucky you get. Don't forget to cheer REAL loud at the end, no matter what ya end up with. Got it?!
Return to Zeki
- Zeki
- Did ya end up winning what you wanted? If not, you can always spin it again. For the right price, of course.
- Player
- We had a deal.
- Zeki
- What deal?
- ...I'm just pulling your leg, pal. I remember promising I'd tell ya why I didn't hang a wish up on that tree.
- The answer's simple, really. I just don't believe in making wishes.
- You see, we Grimalkins prefer to make things happen ourselves, through our own means. We don't seek help or guidance from anyone else.
- I mean, we could pray to the Chimera, Dunya, for things, but she'd tell us to get off our lazy butts and figure it out ourselves.
- Player
- Tough love...
- Zeki
- Eh, I'm used to it. My ma was the same way.
- Player
- Who's Dunya?
- Zeki
- Dunya business! Get it? None o' ya business? Ah, I crack myself up sometimes.
- Dunya's kinda like our Dragon. She's a lot more of the "tough love" type, though. Kind of like my ma.
- ... *sigh*
- Well, that's all I got for ya, buddy. Tell ol' Chayne I said hi. I can see him lookin' over here!
Completion
Return to Chayne
- Player
- (Explain what happened with Zeki)
- Chayne
- I see... I was wondering why he was participating in everything but the wish tree. Now I understand why.
- Player
- I feel like there's more to the story...
- Player
- Zeki got those sad kitten eyes for a second!
- Player
- He seemed a little TOO cheerful.
- Player
- He's definitely hiding something.
- Chayne
- Is that so? Hmm...
- Player
- What should we do?
- Chayne
- Nothing. It is not our place to question Zeki. If he wishes to open up to us, he will of his own volition.
- In the meantime, please enjoy the Maji Market and the Luna new year's festivities to the fullest.
- Oh, and please take this for your troubles. Thank you, Phoenix's child. I will reach out to you when the time comes...
Notes
Wish Tree Wishes
The only thing I want is for my son to have a blessed year. I hope life in the Capital is treating him well.
All I wish for this year is to grow 2 inches taller. Soon enough, Nai'o's going to be asking ME for help getting stuff from the top shelf!
This coming year, I wish for double our harvests. It's about THYME we BEET our personal record!
There is but one thing I ask for this year, and it is to find the first edition for the book I've been searching so fervently for... It's so close I can feel it within my reach.
I only have one with[sic], and it is for everyone's wishes to come true. May the coming year be filled with good fortune and joy for us all.
I wish to be the first to get my hands on the newest volume of Midnight Desires. I'm just itching to find out what messy affairs are hiding in those pages!
I have spoken at length with Auni to understand what wishes are. According to him, wishes are things that you want dearly. Auni wants dearly to grow taller, and I want that for him too. Therefore, I would like to wish for 12 inches to be added to his height. I think that wil make him very happy.
I wish to discover a creature not a soul has ever been[sic] seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or felt before. If I am the first to find it, that means I will also be the one to name it. How exciting! I must start my search at once!
I hope that next year is a prosperous one for Kilima. Perhaps a Bahari Times article singing praises for our Maji Market would help with that.
I want nothing but peace and quiet in the valley.
My Jina has been working very hard on her thesis defense. I wish for her to succeed at it this year.
I wish to be able to keep the mines running for another year. It'd be nice to live out here for a little longer.
There is only one thing I could ever wish for, and it is to finally earn the right to stitch my name into my clothing and have it last forever.
I wish for me to pass my thesis defense this year! It'd be nice to finally see all of my hard work pay off...
I wish for my garden to be happier and healthier this year!
I want to follow my true calling this year and become a pirate queen whose name is feared forever.
I wish that this year is the one we crush Harvest Meadows at every competition we have against them. I can't wait to see the look on Maedi Martingale's face when they put the victory ribbon on Butterball!
This year, I really hope my dad finds his special someone. Maybe then he'll stop being such a grump all the time.
All I want is more money. Lots of it. Pretty please with lettuce soup on top?
I wish to get closer to my son this year! Now that he's all grown up, he thinks he's too cool to spend time with his mom. Hassian, if you're reading this, come home for dinner! I'll even make you your favorite.
My only wish is for the world to grow more peaceful. I, of course, will do my part in making this happen.
The nights get so cold and lonely sometimes. It would be nice to have someone nice on the eyes to warm my evenings up...
Tau wishes for an abundance of treats in the coming year, specifically ones rich in proteins. He enjoys those quite a bit. - Hassian
This year, I'd like more bonding time with my brother Reth. We've gotten distant over the years, and it's time that's changed!
I wish to celebrate the Luna New Year with my family again- whether from Kilima or beyond. Who knows what surprises next year has for lucky ol' Zeki?
