Maji, also known as the Great Dragon, is the deity and creator of the Majiri in Palia. He is depicted as a maned, blue serpentine creature with whiskers akin to a Chinese "Loong" dragon, usually posed with a curled lower body and a raised horned head.

About

Maji is a dragon god worshiped by Majiri residents of Palia, often at shrines or by burning candles and incense. He is known to be able to grant wishes. He is said to be present throughout nature and watching over Palia from beyond the Veil. Maji created the Majiri just as Embra created Humans. Hundreds of years ago, the Dragon spoke directly with Majiri through a Wellspring, but his presence and voice have waned over time. No one has spoken to the Dragon for thousands of years. It's rumored that the the mortal mind can't handle speaking with him directly, so the Dragon leaves voice-like impressions at shrines to explain his will. Maji's teachings and wisdom show people how to live a good life, even without his presence.

Maji is said to communicate his current thoughts to Palians through flashes of light from Luna, one of Palia's two moons. Maji's face can be seen on Luna's Wellspring, if one looks hard enough.[1]

The Dragon's favorite element is water. In star charts, Maji is often depicted as a dragon, which to Humans may look similar to a fish.[2]

Maji is fond of pearls, especially green pearls, which are colloquially known as "Dragon Pearls".[3] Dragon's Beard Peat is likely named after Maji as well.

Cultural Influence

Majiri often worship and pray to Maji so that he may grant their wishes. Shrines or statues to Maji can be seen in homes and other locations around Palia, including the Dragon Shrine in Maji's Hollow. Some Majiri dedicate their lives to being sages, who pursue a close relationship with the Dragon and serve their communities as spiritual leaders, healers, shrine attendants, and other occupations. Occasionally, Majiri will write wishes on letters and leave them at shrines, so that those who find them will work to make the wish come true.[4]

Maji Market, a Majiri tradition, is named after Maji. Some believe the Dragon assumes different physical forms and join the celebrations in order to them with good fortune. For this reason the Maji Market is decorated with the Dragon's semblance, in addition to a [tree] in honor of Maji's power to grant wishes.
